BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Oct. 27, 2026 - Nicholas A. Duston, Esq., Norris McLaughlin, P.A. attorney and Board President of the Adult Day Center of Somerset County (ADC) is proud to announce Sergeant Richard "Rick" Tichenor of the Hillsborough Township Police Department as the recipient of the 2026 Steve Kalafer Community Leadership Award. The award will be presented at ADC's 15th Annual Generations Gala on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026, at The Palace at Somerset Park, with cocktails and dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Steve Kalafer Community Leadership Award recognizes individuals whose compassion, leadership, and dedication to service make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. This year's honoree, Sgt. Tichenor, embodies these qualities through his longstanding commitment to the community, particularly his efforts to support and build relationships with older residents.

The values Sgt. Tichenor was nominated for align with the ADC's mission: for many, he is more than a law enforcement officer, he is a familiar face, a trusted resource, and someone who takes the time to listen, offer assistance, and make residents feel supported. His interactions with older adults reflect an understanding that serving a community goes beyond responding to emergencies and builds trust, showing compassion, and ensuring that individuals feel valued and cared for.

Sgt. Tichenor's dedication to service began in the United States Marine Corps, where he served in deployments around the world, including Iraq, Mongolia, Mozambique, and Afghanistan. Following his military career, he continued serving others through law enforcement, beginning in his hometown of Montville, New Jersey, in 2014. Since joining the Hillsborough Township Police Department in 2017, Tichenor has advanced from patrol officer and K-9 handler to corporal and now sergeant. Throughout his career, he has remained focused on the people behind the calls for service, earning the trust and respect of residents and fellow officers alike.

"Rick is deserving of this award because of his passion for the profession, his dedication to the profession," said Hillsborough Township Police Chief Michael McMahon. "He's spent a life of service from the military to coming into public service. He wants to make a positive difference in this world. He goes above and beyond and I think that is his calling in life."

His compassion and courage have also been demonstrated in moments of extraordinary need. During Tropical Storm Ida, Tichenor rescued Dr. Kristen Sikorski from dangerous floodwaters, an experience that left a lasting impression on her. "He's courageous and kind and compassionate, yet humble. And his sense of selflessness is just extraordinary," said Dr. Sikorski.

The ADC recognized Tichenor's moments of heroism, courage, and everyday commitment to helping others, noting his willingness to go above and beyond for residents, including older members of the community.

The 15th Annual Generations Gala will bring together community leaders, businesses, families, and supporters to celebrate Tichenor's contributions while raising funds to support the ADC. The event helps ADC continue providing essential adult day care services and meaningful opportunities for older adults to remain engaged, connected, and supported.

There is still time to reserve a seat or table for the 15th Annual Generations Gala. Community members, businesses, and organizations are invited to join ADC in honoring Sgt. Tichenor and supporting its mission.
