BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (September 6, 2023) — The days may be getting shorter as we approach the first days of fall, but Bridgewater Commons will continue to bring in the light and celebrate Chinese culture and traditions as it hosts the free “Chinese Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival” from September 16 through 23.
The Center for Cultural & Creative Exchange (CCCE) will present the traditional Chinese folk celebration of light with a display of illuminated handmade Chinese lanterns throughout the first two levels of the center, lantern making workshops at the Community Hub and a special live performance in Center Court.
“Bridgewater is home to a significant and thriving Asian American community, and we’re thrilled to work with CCCE to honor those traditions,” said Tom Kovacic, Director of Marketing for Bridgewater Commons. “And we’re very excited that many of our tenants are joining in the fun with special offers at the live performance, making it fun and a value for all.”
Displayed on the first two levels of the three-level property Bridgewater Commons, 15 handmade Chinese lanterns up to 10 feet high in various forms from animals to dragons will illuminate the center’s walkways throughout business hours. Throughout the ages, the Chinese have used lanterns not only as sources of light or simple paper decoration, but they symbolize vitality, social status and good luck.
At 1 p.m. on September 16, the Festival will truly kick off with a spectacular live performance of traditional Chinese music, dance and juggling at Center Court! Lucky guests will receive red envelopes with messages of luck and special offers to several shops and eateries. The coupons will include 10% off at Alex’s Gyro & Falafel, Bananas Smoothies, California Pizza Kitchen, Charley’s Philly Steaks, Crepes du Nord, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, Gong Cha, Haagen-Dazs, Saladworks, Sbarro Pizza, and Tori Sushi.
Meanwhile, at the center’s Community Hub, CCCE will host a fun lantern making workshop for the entire family from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on September 16, 17 and 23. Each kit will cost just a $10 donation to the organization, making the workshop accessible to all. A kit purchase also automatically enters participants into a raffle to win multiple prizes worth up to $100, to be drawn at the September 23 workshop.
Established in 2019, CCCE is a non-profit organization founded in New Jersey and its mission is twofold: to help preserve Chinese culture and heritage and to promote unity, harmony, and respect for all demographic groups within the community. Through sharing East Asian culture and art, CCCE provides several cultural events annually including The Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Lunar Chinese New Year and many more.
“As the heart of our greater community, Bridgewater Commons was a wonderful partner in hosting our New Year celebrations in February, so we’re delighted to work with them again,” said Li Ching Jung, head of the CCCE. “It’s giving us a unique opportunity to share yet another aspect of Chinese culture with everyone in Central New Jersey.”
Located along Interstate 287 at the intersections of Route 22 and Route 202/206, the 1.2 million-square-foot Bridgewater Commons is Somerset County’s largest shopping, dining and entertainment destination.
The complex also includes The Village at Bridgewater Commons, a unique, open-air shopping district with more than 10 retailers and food and beverage locations including LOFT, Maggiano’s Little Italy, Shake Shack, and Starbucks.
