Jasmine Saini’s gift of reading poetry punched a ticket to the regional competition for the senior at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
Jasmine earned a trip to the regionals when she was crowned the champion at Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s ninth annual Poetry Out Loud Competition which was staged on Friday, January 12, in the main cafeteria..
She emerged as the winner from a field of 29 of her Bridgewater-Raritan High School mates, which will send her to the Regional Competition that will be held on Monday, February 5, at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown.
Another stirring effort would send her to the Poetry Out Loud State Finals that are scheduled for Thursday, March 14, at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank.
The top two finishers from each of the four regionals in New Jersey will advance to the National Finals that are set for April 30-May 2 in Washington, D.C.
The three poems that she will recite in the regionals are:
“The Contract Says: We’d Like the Conversation to be Bilingual” by Ada Limon
“The Sun Rising” by John Donne
“Dirge Without Music" by Edna St. Vincent Millay
But for now, Jasmine is the champion of Bridgewater-Raritan—and earned family bragging rights, too.
Jasmine’s cousin, Harjas Saini, a junior, finished third in the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Poetry Out Loud Competition.
Sophia Mendoza, a junior, came in as the runner-up on January 12.
Kat Doherty, who is the Poetry Out Loud District Coordinator, was among the pleased observers in the Bridgewater-Raritan High School cafeteria.
“This is always one of my favorite nights of the year,” said Ms. Doherty, who is an English Teacher at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. “I enjoy hearing all the wonderful poems that students choose to share. They’re giving the audience an incredible gift with their performance.”
