Tuesday TidBit - Why Women's Clothing Don't Have Pockets

At the end of the 1600s, women didn't even have pockets in their clothing; instead, they wore belts with attached pockets underneath their skirts and accessed them through small slits. Often as stylish as the purses of today, these were spacious enough to carry everything from fruit to gloves. Due to the shrinking of dresses and the lack of space for covert storage, purses became more fashionable (as well as more functional). For a time, most women's pockets were even larger than men's; pockets were not regularly sewn directly into clothing until the late 18th century.
