2024 NJ Top Latino Community Friend/Ally Award Presented to SCVTHS School Counselor
BRIDGEWATER – Maureen Lawler, School Counselor at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS), was recently named a 2024 NJ Top Latino Ally/Friend by advocacy organization Latino Spirit for her service to the Spanish speaking students and families in the school community.
Ms. Lawler, who has been a member of the SCVTHS staff for over 24 years, has made it a point during her career to provide an inclusive environment for the students, parents, and guardians she works with, including providing information on topics such as college admissions, career guidance, academic support, and a variety of personal and family issues. When necessary, Ms. Lawler has gone the extra step to ensure that Spanish speakers receive this information in their native language so they can have accurate and understandable guidance on these important topics.
Maria Santiago, SCVTHS Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant, nominated Ms. Lawler for the honor. “This award recognizes Ms. Lawler's dedication to our Spanish-speaking families and their children throughout her career” she said, adding “She consistently ensures that parents are informed through various means of communication, including translation services. Ms. Lawler keeps these parents updated on their children's progress and makes accommodations based on their input.”
Latino Spirit CEO Diego Maya visited the SCVTHS campus recently to present Ms. Lawler with her award. In addition, she will be featured in the organization’s Latino Index and their Top Latinos magazine, and was presented with a certificate of honor and a commemorative poster.
When asked about her feelings on receiving the award, Ms. Lawler said “I am deeply touched by this recognition. Thank you Mrs. Santiago for nominating me. I will be forever grateful.
