October in Raritan always feels like a season that invites people to slow down, gather, and create something meaningful. This year, the Raritan Public Library is embracing that spirit with a lineup of events that blend fall fun, hands‑on creativity, and a celebration of local heritage.
The month begins with a countywide tradition: Somerset County’s Journey Through the Past, held on Saturday, October 10 (9 AM–5 PM) and Sunday, October 11 (12 PM–4 PM). Families from across the region will explore historic sites, meet reenactors, and learn about the stories that shaped Somerset County. For many Raritan residents, it’s the unofficial kickoff to fall — a weekend of nostalgia, discovery, and community pride.
As the month moves along, excitement builds inside the library’s children’s room. On Monday, October 21 at 5:00 PM, kids ages three and up will gather for the Candy Corn Tooth Paper Pumpkin Craft, a delightfully silly Halloween workshop where little artists create wide‑grinning pumpkins decorated with candy‑corn teeth. It’s messy, imaginative, and exactly the kind of event that fills the library with laughter.
The very next day, the library becomes a hub of creativity for adults. On Tuesday, October 22 at 11:00 AM, patrons are invited to join Adult Crafternoon: Mini Charcuterie Board Scarecrow, a fall‑themed crafting session where participants transform wooden charcuterie boards into charming scarecrow décor. With autumn leaves, sunflower accents, and plenty of paint, the event promises a cozy morning of conversation and creativity.
Later that evening, at 5:30 PM, neighbors will return for the monthly Recipe Swap, featuring October’s theme: Italian Favorites. Participants will bring beloved dishes — from family‑recipe meatballs to homemade cannoli — and share stories, techniques, and traditions. It’s one of the library’s most heartwarming programs, where food becomes a bridge between cultures and generations.
