Hello Kitty Goes Beyond Cute: New Research Shows Kindness and Connection Are Redefining the Meaning of "Cute"

For generations, Hello Kitty has been a global symbol of Japan's kawaii culture, known for her iconic look and timeless appeal. But according to new research commissioned by Sanrio, the meaning of "cute" is evolving beyond appearance and becoming more closely linked to kindness, connection, and emotional well-being.

The findings are part of Hello Kitty: Beyond Cute, a new campaign exploring how younger generations are redefining cute as something that makes people feel good rather than simply something that looks appealing. While Hello Kitty has long been associated with a playful aesthetic, Sanrio says her core values have always centered on friendship, compassion, and bringing people together.

A survey of 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom revealed that 38% believe the meaning of "cute" has changed over the last decade. Among Millennials and Gen Z respondents, more than half agree, with many describing cute as something tied to positive feelings, thoughtfulness, and emotional connection.

While puppies and kittens remain the most recognizable symbols of cuteness, respondents also highlighted everyday acts of kindness. Sending a message because something reminded you of a friend, writing a handwritten note, or offering a thoughtful gesture were all considered examples of what "cute" means today.

The study also found that wholesome moments have a meaningful impact on well-being. More than 80% of respondents said cute moments bring happiness, while nearly 70% said they provide comfort during difficult times. Many also reported feeling more connected to others through these small, positive interactions.

Sanrio believes this shift reflects a broader cultural trend. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, people are increasingly valuing experiences and actions that create genuine warmth, joy, and human connection.

To celebrate the campaign, Sanrio will launch Hello Kitty: Beyond Cute in Paris from October 31 through November 26. The immersive experience will guide visitors through interactive spaces themed around Calm, Play, and Discovery. Guests can explore digital art installations, creative workshops, collaborative games, and personalized activities designed to highlight kindness, self-expression, and community.

More than just an exhibition, the event aims to show how Hello Kitty's message continues to resonate across generations, proving that being "cute" is about much more than appearances. In today's world, it may be just as much about how we treat one another as how we look.
