Hillsborough’s Scarecrow Festival Celebrates America’s Semiquincentennial

HILLSBOROUGH TOWNSHIP, NJ — Hillsborough Township is gearing up for its annual Scarecrow Festival, which this year highlights America’s Semiquincentennial.

“Hillsborough Township is excited to celebrate America's 250th anniversary with this special edition of the Scarecrow Festival,” announced Mayor Catherine Payne.

Starting September 28th, the Scarecrow Festival display area will be open for visitors to view entries and vote throughout October. Registration to enter this exciting community event is free and open to all Township residents, businesses, organizations, schools, classrooms, and sports teams.

Since its inception in 2021, this annual fall event has grown in popularity. The 2026 edition promises to be a vibrant and whimsical celebration that brings the community together in a joyful display of creativity and tradition. This milestone event will feature an array of uniquely designed scarecrows, each crafted with imagination and skill by local artists, families, and organizations.

Attendees can stroll through the festival grounds to marvel at inventive characters ranging from classic scarecrows to contemporary pop culture icons, plus a special patriotic category commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary. The festival provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the remarkable creativity and talent of residents, organizations, and businesses.

On October 26th, the festival will culminate in an awards ceremony and family fun event to celebrate the most outstanding scarecrow designs. The celebration will feature a trophy presentation, children's activities, and seasonal refreshments. Whether you are a returning visitor or a first-time attendee, the Scarecrow Festival offers unforgettable memories and a delightful experience for all ages.

Beginning today, interested participants can register using the form on the Hillsborough Township website. This will also be posted on the Township Facebook page, Mayor’s eNews, and Experience Hillsborough newsletters. A registration link will also be sent to local businesses through the HBA newsletter. Local businesses and organizations are strongly encouraged to utilize this unique opportunity to build community awareness at no cost.

Online voting will be open from September 29th through October 26th. Visitors can cast their votes via QR codes located throughout the display area or via the form on the Township website.
