BRIDGEWATER – As part of the annual Week of Respect (October 2nd – 6th) and in accordance with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (P.L.2010, c.122), Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) welcomed former Chicago Cubs draft pick and motivational speaker Chris Singleton for an assembly on forgiveness, unity and respect. Singleton shared his personal struggle in dealing with the loss of his mother after she was killed in the Emanuel Church mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015. Mr. Singleton gave a powerful message that “love is stronger than hate” and to always respect others as you may not know what they may be going through.
Also as part of the annual Week of Respect, Kayla Elizalde, Linkages School-based Youth Services Recreation Coordinator assisted students with expanding the Wall of Peace. The SCVTHS Wall of Peace began in 2008 and contains approximately 475 painted bricks, which are designed and painted by SCVTHS students and staff.
Students also contributed to the “Tree of Respect” by writing messages on paper leaves of how they respect themselves and others. Over 75 students participated in adding statements to the Tree of Respect and the work is now displayed in the Linkages Department. Linkages School-based Youth Services is funded by the New Jersey Department of Children and Families.
