BRIDGEWATER – The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) and the National Honor Society (NHS) at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS) recently joined forces to collect soup for the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

Over one hundred cans were donated by students and staff. The majority of donations came as part of a promotion done in conjunction with the annual Winter Gala that was held on February 9th. Students received a discount on their ticket price if they brought in a can of soup. According to Ms. Susan Santiago, advisor to the NTHS, another portion of the ticket price helped support scholarship funds at SCVTHS.

Sabrina Abella, President of the NTHS, thanked the school PTO for its help with the dance, and also stated that the soup drive would not have been successful without the assistance of Ms. Santiago and NHS Advisor Mrs. Deborah Gichan.

NTHS Vice President Bryanna Pasternak noted that “The soup drive places an emphasis on student involvement and service in the community” adding that while the Honor Societies are usually known for scholarship, each has a service component to their program.

Mrs. Gichan echoed Bryanna’s comments. “Somerset County Vo-Tech's NTHS and NHS students consistently demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, and results when it comes to community service. The soup drive is yet another example of that.”

The cans of soup will be delivered to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County where they will be made available to members of the community experiencing financial difficulty.
