Middle School Student Creates an Award-winning Essay

The essentials and convenience of a pencil sharpener sparked the interest of one Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School student.

Showrya Verma, a 7th Grader, participated in an essay contest that was sponsored by the Equity Committee at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School to celebrate Black History Month.

According to Lindsay Rath, a Middle School Latin Teacher who was involved in this project, all students were invited to submit an essay about a Black inventor.

“The students were asked to write about the inventor's life and their invention, and to also imagine what life would be like today without their invention,’’ Ms. Rath explained.

Well, Showrya couldn’t imagine not being able to use an efficient pencil sharpener.

So he wrote about John Lee Love, who was the inventor of the pencil sharpener.

This student certainly got his point across.

Showrya was named as the winner of the contest.

Ms. Rath shared a quote from Showrya's essay:

"Pencils are a tool for thought. They enable billions of people around the world to learn, grow, develop, and succeed in modern society. But what if you had to get your trusty pocket knife out and sharpen the pencil manually, every single time? Well, we have one person to thank for sparing us this tedious and time-consuming process - John Lee Love."

The runner-up in the contest was 8th grader Noah Roberts-Thorne, who wrote about Garrett Morgan, the inventor of the traffic light.

Both students received a gift card as their prize.

“We are grateful for all the students who submitted well-thought out essays about important, and sometimes overlooked, Black inventors,” Ms. Rath said.
