BRIDGEWATER – Jake Sisco, a senior enrolled in the Automotive-Diesel Technology Program at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS), was honored by the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) as a Somerset County “Unsung Hero” at a ceremony held on March 18.

According to the NJSBA, “Unsung Heroes make outstanding contributions to their schools and committees, even though they are often overlooked under traditional student recognition guidelines. Unsung Heroes can be students who make their school a better place because of their warm personality, their empathy and concern for others. They tend to not let obstacles stop them.”

Jake was given the award because of, among other things, his exceptional volunteer work, his positive attitude, and how he has overcome adversity to achieve his goals while helping others in the process. According to SCVTHS staff member Maria Santiago, “Jake has demonstrated remarkable growth and maturity. We are proud to have him as a member of our community.”

Jake’s guidance counselor, Karen Winfield, feels that he is truly deserving of the honor. “Jake is always kind, respectful, and courteous; a true pleasure to be around. He is beyond hardworking and determined and I cannot wait to hear about all that he will undoubtedly accomplish in the future.”

Jake has already begun to achieve his goals. As a work-study employee at BMW of Bridgewater, he submitted a video in which he explained why he likes working for the dealership. As a result, he was chosen to receive a trip to the BMW Performance Center West in California where he will spend two days training and test-driving cars.

When asked how he felt about being named an “Unsung Hero” Jake said he was pleased to receive the award and that he “wanted to thank everyone who believed in me and helped me achieve this honor.”
