How CJHRC Helps You Navigate Housing, Rentals & Savings

Finding a safe, affordable place to call home has never been more challenging. Rising rents, limited inventory, and stricter lending requirements are making it harder for people at every stage of life — from young adults signing their first lease, to families seeking more space, to seniors hoping to downsize without breaking the bank. In this climate, having the right information, guidance, and support can make all the difference.
That’s where the Central Jersey Housing Resource Center (CJHRC) steps in. Based in Somerville, this HUD-approved nonprofit has been helping residents navigate the rental and homeownership process for over three decades. Through free counseling, educational webinars, and innovative programs like their Savings Match Plan, CJHRC gives individuals and families the tools they need to secure stable housing and build toward their future.
Free Rental Counseling & Webinars
CJHRC offers one-on-one rental counseling in English and Spanish, ideal for first-time renters or those exploring affordable options. Services include help with rental searches, budgeting, credit guidance, homesharing, application documentation, and access to both market-rate and income-restricted listings
They also host a free “Rental Info & Resources” webinar, covering federal/state housing programs, fair housing rights, money management, avoiding eviction, tenant-landlord responsibilities, and effective unit searches
Pathway to Homeownership
Beyond rentals, CJHRC supports individuals looking to purchase resale units through state and municipal programs. Counselors guide applicants through income-eligibility, application bundles, and lottery processes for affordable homes in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties
Financial Literacy & Certificate Programs
CJHRC’s HUD-approved counselors provide financial literacy education, including budgeting and credit counseling for renters, buyers, and those facing foreclosure or eviction. They also offer certificate programs—including a two-day virtual homebuyer workshop—that equip participants with skills and confidence to pursue homeownership
Savings Match Program
Looking to build savings for housing? CJHRC’s Savings Match Program invites participants to save as little as $25 per month. Over time, you can earn up to $900 toward your financial goal—perfect for moving costs, security deposits, or down payments.
