Community Alert: Protecting Your Information While You Shop
Shopping trips to stores like Walmart, Target, or even the local grocery should feel safe and routine. But law enforcement and consumer protection agencies are warning residents to stay alert for a growing concern—digital “skimming” or scanning of personal information.
Criminals are using small, concealed devices to try to capture data from credit cards, debit cards, or even phones that use contactless payment. In some cases, they may walk close to shoppers, even seniors, in an attempt to scan wallet or pocket information without ever touching them.
Protecting yourself is simple but important. Here are a few steps to keep your information safe:
-
Use RFID-blocking wallets or sleeves to prevent electronic scanning.
-
Keep cards and IDs deep inside a bag or wallet rather than in an outside pocket.
-
Stay aware of your surroundings when approached unexpectedly.
-
Monitor your accounts regularly for any unusual activity.
Walmart in Manville has police officers walking the store while customers shop. Continue to stay mindful even around law enforcement or security in a busy store and in the parking lot.
Watch for skimmers when going in gas stations and other stores during your grab and go shopping trips
Technology makes shopping easier, but it also creates new risks. A little awareness goes a long way in protecting your personal information while you enjoy your day.
