Legal Services of Northwest New Jersey (LSNWJ) continues to demonstrate how mission-driven legal advocacy can transform lives and strengthen entire communities. This year, the organization is celebrating a new generation of leadership alongside decades of groundbreaking work that has reshaped housing rights, consumer protections, and access to justice throughout the region.

Kudos are in order for LSNWJ’s Jonathan Tolentino, Esq., who received a 2025 LSNJ Rising Star Award. Although he is new to leadership as LSNWJ’s Community Health Team Leader, Tolentino brings ten years of legal experience and has already made a significant impact on the Public Entitlements and Housing Teams since joining the organization three years ago. In reflecting on the honor, he noted his appreciation for “the reminder how much of a privilege it is to work with good people. Success means nothing if you do not have amazing colleagues to share it with.”

LSNWJ is a nonprofit law firm serving residents with limited incomes across Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren Counties. Beyond its daily client representation, the organization has built a distinguished history of impact advocacy—legal work that not only resolves individual cases but also changes the law for entire communities.

Few examples illustrate this better than LSNWJ’s attorneys whose work has been recognized with statewide Impact Advocacy Achievement Awards. Notably, two of these awards are named after LSNWJ attorneys—an honor reserved only for extraordinary contributions that shape New Jersey jurisprudence.

This year, the 2025 Gerald R. Brennan Outstanding Achievement in Advocacy Award was named for longtime LSNWJ attorney Gerald “Gerry” Brennan. Brennan’s advocacy over the years has advanced justice for countless clients. Known for his leadership in housing law and individual rights, including commitment cases, Brennan has also mentored generations of attorneys. Even in retirement, he returned temporarily to support LSNWJ’s work and the client community.

Brennan’s legacy includes spearheading the enforcement of tenants’ rights to vacate judgments of possession in specific circumstances. His 1994 argument before the New Jersey Supreme Court in Housing Authority of Morristown v. Little led to a critical precedent: the Court upheld the trial court’s decision to vacate an eviction judgment on equitable grounds. That decision continues to inform housing cases statewide.

Another major precedent emerged from the work of LSNWJ’s Richard Mastro, for whom an Impact Advocacy Award was named in 2016. Mastro’s appeal in Midland Funding LLC v. Thiel resulted in a New Jersey Appellate Division ruling that applies a four-year statute of limitations to store-issued credit card debts. This decision remains significant for consumers who face collection actions after the legal time limit has expired, providing them with a defense and a clear avenue for relief.

These achievements underscore how impact advocacy works: when a case results in a published opinion or is heard on appeal, the decision can guide future courts and change the law beyond a single client’s matter. While LSNWJ’s primary mission is direct representation, the ripple effects of its appellate victories continue to protect thousands of New Jersey residents.

The organization’s ongoing contributions highlight a powerful truth: equitable justice relies not only on courtroom representation, but on persistent, thoughtful advocacy that shapes a fairer legal landscape for everyone.
