In celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) is proud to announce “Unlocking 250 Years of History." This year-long initiative is a collaborative effort, bringing together SCLSNJ, Revolution NJ, and the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission to offer residents immersive experiences into the county’s storied past.

Recognizing Somerset County’s pivotal role as the "Crossroads of the American Revolution," SCLSNJ is working alongside local organizations and historical sites to ensure that the semiquincentennial is more than just a date on the calendar—it is a community-wide exploration of our shared legacy that will last the whole year through.

The success of the initiative is rooted in a network of local and state collaborations:

Revolution NJ: As an official partner, SCLSNJ will feature the RevNJ traveling exhibit at the Bridgewater and Montgomery branches, offering a professional, state-wide perspective on the diverse stories of the Revolution.

Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission: SCLSNJ is working in tandem with the county to deliver programming both at library locations as well as offsite locations to educate the community about different events from the Revolutionary War

Community Historical Events: Collaborative programming will take place throughout the year at 2026 milestone events such as the The Battle of Bound Brook Reenactment and History on the Green in Somerville

The Library will be offering a number of interactive learning and exploration opportunities including:

SCLSNJ Programming: A curated schedule of in-branch lectures and virtual presentations from historians, bringing the 1770s into the 2020s.

The 250th Anniversary Beanstack Challenge: A digital scavenger hunt where participants earn badges by visiting Somerset County historical locations and completing historic missions.

Expanded Museum Pass Access: Patrons can use their library card to "unlock" free entry to local museums through SCLSNJ’s partnership network.

Curated Local & National Collections: SCLSNJ will feature tailored selections from our extensive library, including informative online resources and librarian curated book lists. In addition the SCLSNJ Historical and Community Memories archive is a unique digital collection that offers a window into Somerset County’s local history and heritage.

"History is not static. It is a living story that each community and each generation shapes through their unique lenses, revealing new layers of shared meaning, helping us discover and define who we are as Americans." says Peter Bromberg, SCLSNJ Library Director. "By partnering with Revolution NJ and the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, we are able to bridge the gap between our local archives and the complex story of our nation’s founding. We aren't just presenting history—we are discovering and defining it together."
