Pop‑Up Walk at D&R Canal State Park Invites Residents to “Smell the Roses” This May

As late spring settles over Somerset County, the D&R Canal State Park is offering residents a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature, and explore one of the region’s most historic landscapes. On Thursday, May 28, 2026, the Park will host a special “Smell the Roses” Pop‑Up Walk, a free, two‑mile round‑trip program blending seasonal beauty with local history.

Unlike traditional guided hikes, the Park’s pop‑up programs require no registration—just show up, enjoy the morning, and take in the scenery. Participants will gather promptly at 10:30 a.m. at Colonial Park Garden’s Parking Lot F, where the rose gardens are expected to be in full bloom. After spending time among the blossoms, the group will continue along the D&R Canal towpath toward East Millstone.

Along the route, the Park’s seasonal historian will highlight the stories that shaped this corridor—from the colonial era and Revolutionary War activity to the canal and railroad years that helped define the region’s growth. Walkers will also see the historic bridge tender’s house and station, a reminder of the canal’s working past and its connection to nearby communities, including Colonial Park.

The outing will be moderately paced and last approximately 2 to 2½ hours. Children are welcome, though those under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees are encouraged to bring water, dress for the weather, and wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. In the event of inclement weather, the walk may be canceled, with notices sent out accordingly.

For questions, residents may contact the Park’s Kingston Office at (609) 924‑5705.

The D&R Canal State Park’s pop‑up walks are designed to be simple, accessible, and enriching—an easy way to enjoy the outdoors while learning more about the history woven into Somerset County’s landscape. If your Thursday morning is free, this is a lovely opportunity to welcome the season and “smell the roses” close to home.
