Major Employer Mars Wrigley to Cut 307 New Jersey Jobs as Headquarters Leaves Newark

New Jersey is facing another significant corporate departure: Mars Wrigley, the iconic maker of M&M’s, Snickers, Twix, Skittles, and Milky Way, has filed a WARN notice with the state announcing 307 job cuts at its Newark headquarters by mid‑October.

The move marks the end of the company’s corporate presence in the city.

Based on available information, the layoffs stem from Mars Wrigley’s decision to relocate its U.S. headquarters to Chicago, where the company recently invested $100 million to expand its footprint. The Newark office — known internally as the “Market Hub” — will be fully sunset by December 2027, according to the company’s statement.

Mars Wrigley emphasized that its Hackettstown manufacturing facility will remain operational, meaning production of many of its well‑known candies will continue in New Jersey. The loss of the Newark corporate hub represents a major shift for the state’s business landscape.

The WARN filing confirms that 307 employees will lose their jobs. WARN notices require large employers to give advance notice of mass layoffs, making the cuts public even when tied to corporate relocation rather than financial distress.

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA) called the departure “another warning sign” that the state must improve its business climate to retain major employers. NJBIA CEO Michele Siekerka noted that the loss of yet another high‑profile company should prompt state leaders to take action to prevent further corporate exits.

Mars Wrigley’s move follows other large WARN‑notice events in 2026, including Samsung Electronics America’s 739 affected roles in Englewood Cliffs as the company relocates its U.S. headquarters to Texas.

Mars Wrigley’s WARN notice is more than a corporate relocation — it’s a reflection of the challenges New Jersey faces in retaining major employers. For residents, especially in Essex and Somerset counties, the cuts underscore the importance of monitoring WARN filings and understanding how these shifts affect the state’s economic future.
