Where Creativity Meets Compassion: Canstruction Returns to Bridgewater Commons

Every September, Bridgewater Commons finds a way to surprise us. This year, Center Court won’t just be a shopping destination—it will become a cathedral of creativity, where imagination rises sky-high in the form of canned goods. Yes, canned goods.

From September 15–22, the mall will host Canstruction @ The Commons, a design competition where towering sculptures—built entirely from cans—take shape to support the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. It’s part art installation, part engineering challenge, and entirely rooted in community impact.

Four teams—Messer, SSP Architects, Paramount Facility Management Solutions, and Seton Hall University—will spend days assembling structures that defy expectations. Some will echo iconic landmarks. Others will lean into whimsy, building larger-than-life creations that make you stop, stare, and smile. Each one is a testament to what happens when design talent meets a mission worth building around.

And this year, the public becomes part of the story. Visitors are invited to explore the exhibit, take in the creativity, and cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award. It’s a chance to celebrate the artistry while recognizing the effort behind every carefully placed can.

But the real magic happens after the applause fades.

When the showcase concludes, every single can used in every sculpture will be donated to help families across Somerset County who are facing food insecurity. What begins as art becomes nourishment. What starts as a competition becomes a lifeline.

In a moment when communities everywhere are searching for ways to come together, Canstruction offers a reminder: creativity can feed people. Design can drive change. And a mall atrium can become a place where compassion takes shape—literally.
