Working Women Wednesdays: Meet Lori, Owner of Snoopy Safe & Sound - Pet Care Business Owner

Once again, Raritan Neighbors found another local business to share. If you haven't heard of Lori's business, you must not have a pet.  I found Lori through tons of social media posts and shares raving about her exceptional customer service when taking care of a furry loved one.  I wanted to find out more and feature her - as this type of business is oftentimes popular in cities, however, Lori has created an established and respected family business with a growing following of grateful pet owners. 

Name of Business: Snoopy’s Safe and Sound 

Raritan Neighbors: Why did you start your business?

Lori: Fifteen years I was originally an elementary school teacher and later, a licensed home childcare provider. I was off in the summers and I really loved animals, so I thought I’d try pet sitting and dog walking during the summer and on weekends for some extra income.

I loved the job so much, and it just began to take off, so I decided to try it as a full-time business. Snoopy was the name of our first family dog, a black Labrador Retriever, I named the business after her. I now have an 8-year-old yellow Lab named Savannah, as well as 3 cats, Petunia, Oliver, and Ama.

Raritan Neighbors: What are some of the services you offer pet owners?

Lori: The services we offer are dog walking, occasionally or regularly scheduled cat sitting, and other small pets. Also pet sitting visits to your home, either 3 or 4 daily 30-minute visits to your home or when you are away on vacation. A new service we are now beginning to introduce: sleepovers in the pets' home while owners are away.

After each visit we make, we will text you with an update, so u can rest easy, knowing your pal is in safe and loving hands. I would advise when people hire a pet sitter that they check to see whether or not that individual or company has pet sitters insurance. I would also pay close attention to how the individual interacts with your dog or cat. An experienced walker/sitter should seem comfortable and confident with your animal.

Raritan Neighbors: What is something about a Pet Pro a customer should know about hiring a pet sitter?

Lori: A pet professional should require a meet and greet with you and your pet, and they should ask lots of questions about your dog’s temperament both at home and on walks.

You should ask for references, and check them. Too many people are hobbyists when it comes to pet sitting, and you need to know you are dealing with a professional who will take the job of caring for your pet very seriously. You should ask them to update you daily. You should show them the proper way to put on your dog’s harness to make sure the harness is snug and secure.

Raritan Neighbors: What is a common misconception about your type of work?

Lori: A misconception people may have when hiring a pet sitter is that all the person needs to be is an animal lover. Although important, that is not enough. The person needs to be responsible, trustworthy, and have at least a basic knowledge of dog/cat behavior, so they can anticipate or prevent a problem from occurring.

What do you enjoy most about living in Raritan and Somerset County?

I enjoy living in Raritan because it’s a perfect mixture of the suburban lifestyle, with a splash of an urban feel too. It was a wonderful place to raise our children. I love the diversity. And of course, I love the pet-friendly attitude of most people and places.

Raritan Neighbors: What is the best way to reach you to take care of a pet?

Lori: The best way to reach me? Texting is the best way, and calling is the second best. Takes me a bit longer to respond to emails because I’m on the road all day.
