Statement by Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale G. Caldwell on the Passing of Jesse Jackson
"Today we mourn the loss of a giant of justice and compassion. My father knew, marched with, and was arrested alongside Rev. Jackson during the Civil Rights Movement. They were both proud graduates of North Carolina A&T State University and shared a lifelong commitment to standing up for those pushed to the margins of society.
"In this photograph, my Dad, Rev. Dr. Gilbert H. Caldwell, and Rev. Jackson are walking together after being held overnight in a New York City jail following a civil rights march for workers’ rights. Their steps that day helped move our nation forward.
"We have lost yet another champion of human rights and a true voice for the voiceless. His courage changed America, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
"My prayers are with his family and all who loved him during this difficult time."
