The Hillsborough YMCA was the place to be on March 13, as Hillsborough High School’s AP Physics 1 students took the ultimate plunge into hands‑on engineering.
For this year’s Cardboard Regatta, students stepped out of the classroom and into the pool to prove that physics isn’t just theoretical—it floats. Under the guidance of physics teacher Shawn Templin, teams were challenged to design and build a full‑sized, seaworthy vessel using only corrugated cardboard and duct tape.

From sleek speedboats to wildly creative designs, the ingenuity on display was impressive. Some boats glided like luxury cruisers, while others… well, sank with enthusiasm. But the real victory was in the experimentation, teamwork, and problem‑solving that powered every attempt.
The cheers from classmates, staff, and spectators made the event feel like a true community celebration.
A big shout‑out to Mr. Templin and all the AP Physics 1 students for transforming a tough physics concept into a splashing success. There may have been a few “Titanics,” but the creativity and determination on display were absolutely unsinkable.
