HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Township officials are alerting residents and applicants to a recent phishing scam involving fraudulent emails requesting payment for application review.

According to the township, some individuals applying to local Boards have received fake invoices and instructions to wire funds for an alleged escrow balance. Officials emphasized that Hillsborough Township will never request payment via wire transfer.

Applicants are urged to carefully verify the legitimacy of any email they receive—especially the sender’s address—before opening attachments or responding.

Anyone who receives a suspicious message or has concerns is encouraged to contact the Planning and Zoning Department directly for guidance.
