APRIL 13, 2026 –The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) is proud to announce the completion of a major, eco-conscious renovation at its Hillsborough branch. To celebrate this milestone, the Township will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hillsborough branch. Members of the press and the public are cordially invited to attend and explore the revitalized community space.
The multi-phase renovation focused on transforming the 17,000-square-foot facility into a brighter, more flexible space. The final and most significant upgrade involved replacing 20-year-old carpeting with a sustainable flooring solution that prioritizes both patron comfort and environmental responsibility.
In a unique collaboration, Flooring Foundation coordinated the removal of more than 17,000 square feet of legacy material and identified responsible recycling pathways, diverting significant waste from landfills without adding any operational burden to library staff or township teams. Through their partnership with Shaw Contract, the project utilized eco-friendly carpet tile, which can be fully reclaimed and recycled through the re[TURN]® program at the end of its life cycle.
“After our spring 2025 renovation gave the library a wonderful facelift, the last remaining upgrade was replacing the existing carpet,” said Cathy DeBerry, Hillsborough Branch Manager. “We’re excited for visitors to enter a space that is brighter and fresher—especially families and children who often sit and play on the floor.”
“Recycling aligns closely with the library’s role in the community,” explained Peter Bromberg, SCLSNJ Library Director. “Libraries are fundamentally green because our service is based on the reuse of materials and shared resources. We champion and model resource sharing and sustainability every day. This project was a great way to express our green values by recycling materials, reducing landfill waste, and modeling environmentally responsible practices in collaboration with our municipal partners in Hillsborough.”
