MANVILLE, N.J. — The "Golden Age" of Manville distance running reached new heights this past weekend as junior Jayran Rodriguez captured his second state championship of the academic year, leading a historic surge for the Mustangs at the NJSIAA Group 1 Indoor Track State Championships.

Rodriguez, who made history in the fall as the school’s first-ever Cross Country State Champion, dominated the 3200m with a school-record time of 9:31. After a blistering 4:44 opening mile, Rodriguez pulled away from the field to secure the gold. He now enters the post-season ranked 15th overall in the state of New Jersey.

"For a runner like Jayran, there is no offseason; the seasons all blend together into one long grind," said Winter Track Head Coach Jeff Ruggini. "There was some added hunger on his part as he was injured last winter. Jay used that as fuel. He has evolved into a frontrunner who goes into every race believing he can win."

The championship weekend saw two other Mustangs punch their tickets to this Sunday's Meet of Champions (MOC):

  • Kamille Aly tied the school record in the High Jump, clearing 5-0 to take 2nd place. Aly battled through a high-pressure jump-off for the gold, showcasing the consistency and mental toughness that have defined her season. "Winning is contagious," Ruggini noted, highlighting Aly’s training with former MOC medalist Professor Ceo. "The hope is that as she moves on to bigger things, someone will rise and continue where she left off."
  • Damian Smutek delivered one of the grittiest performances of the meet in the 1600m. After being boxed out at the start and falling to last place, Smutek fought back to finish 3rd with a time of 4:28. "Damian is a fighter," said Ruggini. "It showed in that final lap. The hope is he can keep that momentum going on Sunday and run something in the low 4:20s."

The success of the program is a collaborative effort, building on the foundation laid during the fall cross country season under Coach Kevin Caldwell. Ruggini credited the intense culture of the team, noting that Rodriguez is pushed daily by teammates Smutek and Gabe Zala.

"Coach Caldwell and I are constantly talking about how fortunate we are to be coaching at Manville with this specific group of kids," Ruggini said. "This group runs their guts out day in and day out. This indoor season has shown what our superstars can do."

As the team prepares for the Meet of Champions this Sunday, the pressure is off and the focus is on the reward for months of grueling preparation.

"As Coach Markowitz likes to say, at this point, ‘we are playing with house money,’" added Ruggini. "All the hard work, 10-degree days, and 15-mile runs are over. Kamille, Damian, and Jayran have already made history. Now is the fun part."
