MANVILLE, NJ – The Manville High School Track and Field team delivered a historic performance at the Group 1 State Championships this past weekend, capturing multiple individual state titles, shattering school records, and qualifying top athletes for the upcoming Meet of Champions.

(Photo Courtesy of Manville School District)The boys' team was led by standout distance runner Jayran Rodriguez, who cemented his status as one of the elite runners in New Jersey by winning both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter state titles. Rodriguez dominated the 3200-meter field, breaking the Manville school record with a time of 9:17 and defeating his nearest competitor by a decisive eight seconds. He enters the Meet of Champions ranked 8th across all state groups. This weekend's victories mark Rodriguez’s fourth individual group title this year, completing a rare seasonal "distance trifecta" with a championship in the fall, winter, and spring seasons.
Also scoring for the boys were seniors Damian Smutek and Gabriel Zala, who placed 4th and 5th, respectively, in a highly competitive 800-meter race. The podium finishes put a capstone on two historic high school careers; both Smutek and Zala have been integral to Manville’s recent sectional team titles and numerous school relay records.

With only one missed attempt on the day, Aly secured 2nd place in the state and earned an automatic bid to the Meet of Champions. Turning to the track, Jayde Thompson delivered a fierce performance in the 200-meter dash, battling through the field to secure a 6th-place medal.
