On Wednesday, December 31, 2025, Montgomery Township will mark a significant moment in American history, honoring Major General Richard Montgomery on the 250th anniversary of his death in the Battle of Quebec—one of the earliest and most consequential battles of the American Revolutionary War.

Major General Montgomery holds a distinguished place in the nation’s founding story as the first high-ranking officer of the Continental Army to be killed in battle. His death on December 31, 1775, came during a daring winter siege and assault on Quebec, fought under harsh blizzard conditions and prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The campaign, while ultimately unsuccessful, demonstrated the resolve and determination of the fledgling Continental Army and helped shape the course of the Revolutionary War.

To commemorate this milestone, Montgomery Mayor Neena Singh and township officials will host a tribute ceremony at 2:00 p.m. in the Committee Chambers of the Montgomery Municipal Center, located at 100 Community Drive in Skillman. The program will include brief remarks, a slide presentation highlighting Montgomery’s life and service, and the formal reading of the inscription for a new commemorative plaque that will soon be installed at the municipal center.

The ceremony will also feature the Color Guard of the New Jersey Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, underscoring the historical significance of the occasion and its ties to the nation’s founding.

Montgomery Township is among many communities across the country that adopted Montgomery’s name in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice in the fight for American independence. This December 31 event will officially launch the township’s Revolutionary War 250th anniversary (Rev250) commemorative activities, which will continue throughout 2026.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend and reflect on the legacy of Major General Richard Montgomery and the enduring values of service, courage, and sacrifice. Light refreshments will be served.
