For history buffs, hear another compelling story about the people of the Garden State --the history of Shady Rest. Nestled in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, this site holds a singular distinction: it is America’s first African-American-owned country club.
More than just a golf course, Shady Rest was once a vibrant hub where African-American families gathered for recreation, culture, and community during an era when segregation denied them entry to other clubs. It hosted jazz greats, trailblazing athletes, and influential leaders—making it a place where history was made on fairways and dance floors alike.
This month, you can step into that history. A special panel discussion will explore Shady Rest’s legacy and the ongoing efforts to preserve it for future generations.
Panelists include:
Talib Morgan, Volunteer, Preserve Shady Rest
Susan Hamlette-Mayers, Educator and Coordinator, Shady Rest Community Oral History Project
Susan Pastir, Teacher and Member, Shady Rest Education Committee
Co-hosted by Preserve Shady Rest and the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum, this free program promises to deepen your understanding of New Jersey’s rich cultural past—and the importance of protecting it.
