CAMDEN, N.J. – APRIL 17, 2023 – New Jersey American Water is highlighting National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), which runs from April 17 to April 21 this year.
NWZAW is a public awareness campaign working to help Americans understand the role they play in keeping motorists and roadway workers safe and has been observed for over 20 years. According to the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, one work zone injury occurs approximately every 12 minutes in the US, and one fatality every 10 hours.
“Our employees and contractor crews work in roadways every day, performing critical jobs to help us keep life flowing,” said Mark McDonough, President of New Jersey American Water. “We take safety seriously, and though we train our crews to follow all safety protocols, working in roadways can present heightened risks. National Work Zone Awareness Week provides an opportunity to emphasize the steps we must all take to help keep our crews and ourselves safe.”
New Jersey American Water invests hundreds of millions of dollars into its infrastructure each year and has over 50 crews working around the state on any given day. Whether the company is working to upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure or performing routine maintenance and cleaning, New Jersey American Water’s top priority is keeping crews and motorists safe.
“Just like you, our employees and contractors want to return home safely at the end of each day,” said McDonough. “Help us all stay safe by following these simple rules when driving through work zones.”
Stay Alert. Pay attention to flaggers, workers, and equipment, and be prepared
for sudden stops.
Slow down. Follow all posted speed limits and adjust for traffic flows and
weather conditions.
Give yourself some space. Leave at least two seconds of braking room
between other vehicles.
The company will highlight NWZAW on its social media channels all week and included a work zone safety bill insert message to all customers this month. To learn more about New Jersey American Water’s commitment to safety, visit newjerseyamwater.com.
