Star Shows, Laser Concerts for Kids Highlight RVCC Planetarium’s March Schedule

The March lineup at the Raritan Valley Community College Planetarium in Branchburg features a number of star shows and laser concerts specially designed for children, including programs for audience members as young as three and their families. Some of the kids’ shows scheduled in March include:

Perfect Little Planet, Saturdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 3 p.m.

A family from another star system is seeking the perfect vacation spot. Fly over the surface of Pluto, our best known dwarf planet; sail through the rings of Saturn; feel Jupiter’s lightning storms; and walk on the surface of Mars. Which destination will the family choose? (Recommended for ages 6-12)

Laser Magic, Saturdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 4 p.m.

Enjoy a laser show featuring such songs as “Fireworks” by Katy Perry; “We Don’t Talk about Bruno” from Encanto; “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen; and “Let It Go,” sung by Idina Menzel. (Recommended for ages 6-12)

Magic Tree House: Space Mission, Saturdays, March 8, 15, 22, 29, 7 p.m.

Join Jack and Annie as they discover the secrets of the Sun, Moon, planets, space travel, and more. Who can help them answer the questions left for them by the mysterious "M"? The show is based on the same-titled, best-selling series of novels. (Recommended for ages 5 and older)

Rockin’ Rocket Ride, Saturday, March 29, 3 p.m.

Put on your space suit and blast-off into outer space to visit the Moon, Sun, and planets. A lively experience for young people, the show features selected music from “Journey Into Space” by Jane Murphy. (Recommended for ages 3-8)

Lasers for Littles, Saturday, March 29, 4 p.m.

The youngest audience members are encouraged to sing along with songs by a variety of artists. Tunes in this fun laser concert include “Kalien the Alien” by mr RAY, “I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon” from Sesame Street, “Fruit Salad” by the Wiggles, and “Baby Shark.” (Recommended for ages 3-8)

Other highlights in March include:

  • The Sky Above, a sensory-friendly show specially designed for families with children on the Autism spectrum or those with developmental disabilities, Saturday, March 1, 5 p.m.
  • Astronomy Tonight, a guided tour of the night sky, with information about the upcoming total lunar eclipse, Saturday, March 1, 7 p.m.
  • Rock of Ages laser concert, with songs from the popular Broadway show and feature film, Saturdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 8 p.m.
  • Sunset Meditation, a guided meditation experience in the Planetarium’s reclined seats, Friday, March 7, 7 p.m.

Last fall, the Planetarium installed new computers, video projectors, and audio speakers that provide audiences with an exciting, immersive experience. The new system offers brighter, clearer images and sharper sound quality, as well as an enhanced ability to “fly” through the Universe. The upgrade was funded through the RVCC Foundation by a generous RVCC supporter.

Planetarium tickets cost $11 for one show, $20 for two shows back-to-back on the same day. Reservations are recommended, but all ticket sales are done at the door on the day of the show. Planetarium laser shows include loud music, flashing lights, and rapidly moving graphics, all in a dark environment, and therefore may not be recommended for those who are sensitive to these conditions or have a medical condition that could be exacerbated by them.
