The Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg will present Treehouse Shakers’ production of The Littlest Cove, Friday, March 7, at 1 p.m. The 50-minute show, written and directed by Mara McEwin, is geared for children ages 3-6 and their families.

The production is part of the Theatre at RVCC’s School-Time series, which offers educational field trip opportunities for school groups and homeschoolers.

The Littlest Cove is an immersive discovery play for the very young, full of wonder, visuals, and tactile interactive experiences. The play follows the lives of three unusual creatures who reside on the edge of a small, undiscovered, coastal inlet. Audiences soon learn that they, too, are a part of this enchanting world as they are immersed in the storytelling through play, exploration, and community interactions with the set, props, and performers.

During the production, the audience participates in everyday activities with the creatures set up in different areas of the stage. Some of the show’s areas for exploration include a fishing hole to engage with puppetry fish and a gardening spot composed of soft felt vegetables. Audience members also gather wood made from soft pillows to make a “fire” over which they “cook” the garden vegetables and fish. Other areas offer participants the opportunity to weave tiny baskets, create a short song, and learn a little dance. All the while, the creatures and sea captain mingle in and out of the play space with songs, dance, and interactions.

Due to the interactive nature of the performance, attendance will be limited to a maximum of 125 audience members who will be seated on mats onstage and not in Theatre seats.

Tickets for School-Time performances cost $8 per person, with one free chaperone ticket provided for every 15 tickets bought.
