Lorena David delivered a late kick that proved to be decisive during the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Meet of Champions at Franklin High School on Thursday, June 15. David, a senior runner for Bridgewater-Raritan High School, turned it on late and eventually placed third in the unseeded heat of the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:16.84That third-place effort placed her overall in 13th place for the 3,2000-meter run in the entire Meet of Champions, the final meet in the state for outdoor track and field athletes in New Jersey.

The Meet of Champions was scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, but was postponed one day due to inclement weather.Ava Thomas of Haddonfield High School won the girls’ 3,200 with a time of 10:44.34.“She went from dead last to slowly creeping her way up to second, but then lost that in the final 10 meters,” said Adam Pyle, David’s coach at Bridgewater-Raritan.

Meanwhile, Bridgewater-Raritan’s boys’ 4x800-meter relay team was forced to run three alternates along with Lukas Disko. That four-man group recorded a time of 8:36.20 to finish in 21st place at the Meet of Champions.

Disko was one of the four relay members who qualified for the Meet of Champions with a time of 8:11.22 to place 12th at the Group 4 state meet on Saturday, June 10. Because the Meet of Champions was postponed one day, Alberto Castyillo, Luka D’Amico and Liam Vasquez, who ran with Disko at the Group 4 meet, all missed the state championship races because they had already left to compete at the Nike National Championships in Oregon.

They were replaced at the Meet of Champions by Bridgewater-Raritan teammates Sivamsh Indukuri, Nikola D'Amico and Brendan Heeney.
