ICYMI - SCVTHS Toy Drives Brightened the Holidays for Those in Need

BRIDGEWATER – The Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) community did its best to bring a little joy to those in need this recent holiday season.

Three student groups at the school ran gift drives in the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday, delivering presents – and smiles – to children who needed some holiday cheer.

Students in the Cosmetology Program collected 155 toys for patients being treated at the pediatrics unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (also known as MSK Kids) in New York City. This is the 8th year cosmetology students have accepted donations for the toy drive, which was held in memory of Mackenzie Wright, the niece of Cosmetology instructor Mrs. Julie Frances.

Members of the TOPS program at SCVTHS held a toy drive for local families in need. The students worked with Agape House, a division of Volunteers of America that provides emergency shelter for families, to help make some wishes come true. Students collected and wrapped gifts, and through their efforts were able to fill the wish lists of 35 kids who otherwise would not have received presents this holiday season.

Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick also benefitted from the efforts of SCVTHS students. The Connect4Cancer chapter at the school hosted a Holiday Gift Drive that collected not only toys but also clothes and other items to help make the holiday season a little brighter. Fifty-eight gifts were collected and delivered to patients by members of the club.

Staff at the Hospital commented that this act of kindness was particularly thoughtful, especially “when patients have not been home in some time, and they are missing family traditions and celebrations.”
