Somerset County Offers Free Spring Workshop on Managing Type 2 Diabetes

SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerset County Department of Health invites adult residents who have type 2 diabetes to sign up for a free six week workshop this spring entitled “Take Control of Your Health”. The program will provide individuals with skills and knowledge to assist them in taking an active role in managing their health or that of a loved one with type 2 diabetes.

“So many of our friends and family in Somerset County suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes, conditions that can have significantly improved outcomes with a little knowledge and effort,” said Commissioner Doug Singleterry, liaison to the Department of Health. “This workshop series can provide the foundation for people with type 2 diabetes to live long, full and happy lives and have more positive outlooks on their condition.”

The workshops will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Somerset County Department of Health offices at 27 Warren Street, Somerville, NJ 08876. The program will run weekly from March 27 to May 1. Advanced registration is required by March 20. Learn more about the fun and motivating workshop and register by contacting health.educator@co.somerset.nj.us or calling (908) 203-6072.

Course participants will learn techniques to better manage their symptoms of diabetes such as fatigue, pain, hyper-and hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear, and frustration. Participants will also learn strategies for exercising safely, healthy eating, talking with health care providers, and preventing or delaying diabetes complications. Participants will receive a free book titled, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” a reference guide to further encourage a positive approach to self-management of chronic health conditions.
