Coding Through Summer - Fun with Mr. Richter for CSA Camps

Image

Summer camps are offered by the Bridgewater Raritan School District for grade school students through high school students. Children's activities can be difficult to find and are both affordable and enjoyable. Attending summer camps not only provides grade school students through high school students with a structured and supervised environment, but it also offers a range of benefits. It allows them to develop new skills, build self-confidence, make new friends, and explore their interests in a fun and engaging way.

This summer, Mr. Daniel Richter along with his colleague Mrs. Ostrowski are teaching kids how to code as part of a summer camp. Due to the fun format, the fast camp attracts over 30 kids every week. In the coding summer camp, Mr. Richter and Mrs. Ostrowski introduce kids to various programming languages and concepts through hands-on activities. They teach the basics of coding, such as creating simple games and animations, and gradually progress to more advanced topics like web development and app design.

The interactive nature of the camp ensures that kids not only learn coding skills but also have a lot of fun in the process.

Below are a few fun photos from the camp along with an interview with the dedicated teacher.

Raritan Neighbors NJ: Tell us about your teaching background.

Mr.Richter: This is my second year holding Coding Camps via CSA. I am the K-4 Technology Teacher, and Science Coordinator at Adamsville School.

Raritan Neighbors NJ: What do you enjoy about running such a successful CSA camp?

Mr. Richter: I love how CSA camps gives me an opportunity to not only continue with students of my own, but it allows me to work with a larger population of the nearly 8,000 students at BRRSD by keeping it open for grades 1-8. I have been teaching in the district for 4 years, been a teacher for 6.

Raritan Neighbors NJ: What do students learn in your camps and what do they do each day?

Mr. Richter: My camps challenge students to CREATE in the morning. Break for lunch. Then they have an opportunity to continue creating or have free exploration of Tech in the afternoon. The afternoons turn more into a STEM camp utilizing many facets of tech. It is a lot of fun seeing the various grade levels intermingle, work together, and sometimes help each other learn.

Raritan Neighbors NJ: Can you share with us what are the popular trends in STEM? What are kids doing or playing?

Mr. Richter: Gamification, Robotics, Collaborative Coding, and Augmented Reality/VR are the latest trends in elementary/intermediate coding! Incorporating game-like elements into coding concepts is making it easier than ever for young learners to grasp programming without getting bogged down by syntax. Popular online platforms used at BR: Scratch, Code.org, Tynker, and Kodable.

Raritan Neighbors NJ: Why did you start this summer camp and how will it help students as they grow and learn?

Mr. Richter: In today’s world computational thinking skills have become crucial for success. Coding and programming make these skills engaging, accessible, and relatable to students' lives, encouraging critical thinking and creativity, and preparing them for a future where digital literacy is increasingly important!

Raritan Neighbors NJ: Anything else you'd like the readers to know?

Mr. Richter: I love working with the CSA as it benefits all PTO’s from all schools. I love supporting my PTO!
