Statement from Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin on Supreme Court Decision Undermining the Federal Government
Today’s decision is the latest in a line of cases that undermines the crucial work the federal government does to promote public health, the environment, and public safety. Eliminating the Chevron doctrine will give even more power to the federal courts over our daily lives, by giving them incredibly broad authority to strike down agency interpretation of statutes, even though courts have far less expertise on questions ranging from firearms to immigration to clean air and more.
The uncertainty and instability that will follow is bad for states, residents, and businesses alike and will further politicize our courts. But it also means that the work states do on these important matters will be more crucial than ever, and I am committed as ever to helping fill the gaps blown open in federal laws by this Supreme Court.
