Somerset Commissioner Director Blasts GOP Candidate Bill Spadea on DEI Comments at AACNJ FORUM
(MARCH 26, 2025—SOMERSET, NJ): Following the “State of Black New Jersey Economic Summit” hosted by the African American Chamber of Commerce of NJ, Somerset County Commissioner Director Shanel Robinson had some words for NJ Gubernatorial candidate, Bill Spadea. Spadea who indicated that he would work to end DEI appeared to get under the Commissioner’s skin. “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are essential values that strengthen our community and contribute to a more positive, innovative, and productive environment.”
“Disparaging comments about DEI undermine the progress we have made in fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and opportunity for all individuals. It's important to engage in respectful dialogue about these issues, but it’s equally important to recognize the benefits of diversity and inclusion for the well-being and success of everyone involved.
I remain committed to upholding these values and encourage open, constructive conversations aimed at advancing mutual respect and equality. Unfortunately, gubernatorial candidate Spadea doesn’t understand the value that diversity offers communities across New Jersey, and make no mistake, when they say “DEI” they mean black and brown folks, and that’s simply not what the data shows,” said Robinson.
Robinson, an Air Force Veteran serves as Commissioner Director for the Somerset County Board of Commissioners, as well as the President of the New Jersey Association of Counties.
