Despite the frigid January weather, nineteen community members gathered with the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County for an engaging winter sowing workshop. The session introduced participants to the differences between native and non‑native plants, the ecological value of native species, and the simple methods home gardeners can use to propagate native herbaceous perennials through winter sowing.
Following a Master Gardener–led demonstration, attendees took part in hands‑on sowing using pre‑prepared milk jugs. Each participant received an information packet featuring a Guide to Winter Sowing in Milk Jugs, a resource list, and Rutgers fact sheets to support continued learning at home. The Seed Library team also provided seven native seed packets per participant, complete with plant characteristics and species‑specific propagation instructions.
Participants were encouraged to share both their knowledge and seeds with friends and family to help broaden awareness of the importance of native plants. The Master Gardeners look forward to welcoming everyone back in April for the next workshop, which will focus on transplantation.
