The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) invites the community to a special Black History Month program exploring the powerful and often overlooked stories of African Americans who lived, worked, and built communities in the Sourland Mountain region of New Jersey.
February 21
2–3:30 p.m.
Hunterdon County Library, NJ
Format: Free, in‑person program
Attendees will learn why New Jersey was once referred to as the “Slave State of the North” and discover how formerly enslaved individuals forged new lives rooted in resilience, faith, and community. The presentation highlights key local landmarks—including Stoutsburg Cemetery and Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman—and preserves stories that continue to shape the region today.
This event also features Oh Freedom! with the Golden Gospel Singers, adding a musical dimension that honors the spirit and legacy of African American history in the Sourlands.
