If you’re looking for a meaningful way to honor Black History Month close to home, the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) in Skillman offers a powerful and enriching experience for visitors of all ages. The museum will be open this Friday and Saturday from 1:00–4:00 PM, welcoming the community to explore local history that is too often overlooked.

On Saturday, February 28th, guests can meet SSAAM’s knowledgeable team, hear stories rooted in the Sourland region, and learn how the museum is preserving the legacy of African Americans who lived, worked, and built community here in New Jersey.

A highlight of the visit is the museum’s acclaimed exhibit, “All Stars: Black Baseball in New Jersey and Beyond.” This compelling collection honors the athletes who shaped the game during segregation and exclusion, celebrating their resilience, talent, and impact on America’s pastime. Last year, George Lombard Jr. and Cole Gabrielson from the Somerset Patriots stopped by to experience the exhibit firsthand—an example of how deeply these stories resonate across generations.

SSAAM is located at the historic Mt. Zion AME Church, 189 Hollow Road in Skillman, a site that itself reflects the strength and continuity of the local African American community.

Admission is free, with donations encouraged to support the museum’s ongoing work.

Whether you bring family, friends, or simply your own curiosity, SSAAM offers a thoughtful and inspiring way to celebrate Black History Month right here in Somerset County. The museum looks forward to welcoming visitors and sharing the stories that continue to shape our region.
