Somerset County Commissioners Melonie Marano and Elizabeth Graner joined students in Warren Township on Monday, March 2, 2026, to celebrate National Read Across America Day, a nationwide initiative that highlights the power of reading and the importance of early literacy. Their visits underscored how reading aloud helps strengthen imagination, build foundational language skills, and inspire students to grow as confident, curious learners.

At Central School, Commissioner Marano read The Little Red Pen by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel to a third‑grade class. The lively story sparked conversations about teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of storytelling.

Across town at Woodland School, Commissioner Graner read Eyes That Speak to the Stars by Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho, to a second‑grade class. The book’s themes of identity, pride, and family resonated with students and created a meaningful moment of connection.

Both schools welcomed the commissioners warmly, reinforcing the district’s commitment to fostering a love of reading. Read Across America Day serves as a reminder that books can broaden perspectives and create lasting memories—long after the final page is turned.

Reading recommendations and resources are available at sclsnj.org that includes a number of libraries around the county for neighbors.
