Tree Removal Along Route 202 Marks Start of Major Intersection Improvements in Raritan

RARITAN, NJ — Drivers traveling along Route 202 in recent weeks have likely noticed significant tree and brush removal near the First Avenue jughandle. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), the clearing is the first visible step in a long‑planned infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety at one of Raritan’s busiest intersections.

The work is part of the Route 202 and First Avenue Intersection Improvement Project, a multimillion‑dollar effort that will realign the southbound ramp, widen the intersection, and upgrade drainage systems. NJDOT says the goal is to reduce congestion and improve overall operational performance in an area known for heavy traffic and backups.

Tree removal began in mid‑February, with crews clearing the center of the First Avenue jughandle and sections of Route 202 stretching from the Somerville Circle toward First Avenue. NJDOT expects traffic impacts to begin in mid‑April, with advance notice provided before any lane closures.

What the Project Includes

According to NJDOT’s previously presented plans:

  • Route 202 will be widened in both directions by extending into the existing grass median and installing a concrete barrier.
  • The current First Avenue jughandle will be eliminated and replaced with green space.
  • A new exit ramp will be created on Leland Street, looping behind the office buildings at 600 First Avenue before reconnecting with First Avenue.
  • Danbury Avenue will be closed at Leland Street and converted into a cul‑de‑sac.
  • First Avenue northbound will be restriped to include a left‑turn‑only lane, a through lane, and a right‑turn‑only lane at the intersection.

The project was originally expected to begin in 2025 with completion in 2026. NJDOT now anticipates the full project will be finished in fall 2027.

This long‑awaited upgrade is expected to ease daily congestion and improve safety for commuters, residents, and local businesses that rely on this heavily traveled corridor.
