BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is expressing heartfelt gratitude to the Green Knoll Fire Department after firefighters stepped in to help rescue an injured hawk whose leg had become wedged in a tree crevice nearly 20 feet off the ground.
When the shelter’s responding Animal Control Officer arrived, the situation required both care and courage. Firefighter Tyler received a quick crash course in safe wild‑bird handling before climbing the ladder. Working together, the crew used two ladders and a three‑person team — two firefighters elevated and one positioned below with the carrier — to safely free the distressed bird.
Shelter staff transported the hawk to The Raptor Trust, where it is now receiving specialized treatment and care.
