BRIDGEWATER – The New York Yankees-affiliated Somerset Patriots celebrated Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) student achievement during their April 30th win over the Portland Sea Dogs. Over 275 students, staff, and family members attended the game.
Before the players took the field, SCVTHS students who won medals in New Jersey SkillsUSA competitions were honored on the field for their achievements. Following the parade of medalists, complete with scoreboard announcements, SCVTHS Principal Michael Meyer took the mound and threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Afterwards, staff and students took their seats, cheered as all SCVTHS SkillsUSA competitors’ names appeared on the scoreboard between innings, and watched as the Patriots defeated the Sea Dogs 9-6.
SCVTHS offers 22 career and technical education programs in fields ranging from Agricultural Science to Welding, as well as the Academy for Health & Medical Sciences, a rigorous 4 year Honors Program for highly focused, college-bound students. All students at SCVTHS are members of SkillsUSA, a national workforce development organization whose mission is to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members.
“We are proud of how our students excel in their chosen fields and are thankful to the Patriots for recognizing their achievements,” said SCVTHS Electrical Construction instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor Mike McClain, adding, “These students have proven that skill, dedication, and pride in their craft can earn a standing ovation anywhere.
