Somerset County Celebrates The Annual Rose Day Festival on June 6 at Colonial Park Gardens

SOMERSET, NJ -- The Somerset County Park Commission is launching the summer season with its annual Rose Day Festival at the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden at Colonial Park on Saturday, June 6. The festival features more than 3,000 stunning roses in a rainbow of vibrant colors, activities for the family, live music, food trucks, and picnicking on the lawn.

Guests enjoying the musical entertainment and/or picnicking are encouraged to bring a blanket or folding chair for their comfort. Visitors can bring a lunch or snack from home or grab something delicious from the food trucks. The bands accompanying the roses will be as follows:

  • 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Borderline (Bluegrass Trio)
  • 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. – Zydeco-a-Go-Go (Zydeco & Cajun)
  • 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Akeylah Simone (R&B, Rock & Jazz)

The Rose Festival opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7 and runs through 5 p.m. at Colonial Park Gardens, 156 Mettlers Road, Parking Lot A in Franklin, NJ. Although admission is free, visitors can support the garden by purchasing rose plants to bring home or making a donation. The Rose Festival is open to all ages and will be held rain or shine, but please leave the pets at home as they are not permitted in the Rose Garden.

Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden

In 2015, the Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden received the World Federation of Rose Societies Award of Excellence and is noted for being one of the world’s finest rose gardens. Since the creation of the garden, caretakers have maintained the integrity of its collection of more than 3,000 roses in 345 varieties, which include heritage and newer prize-winning cultivars.

The Park Commission has 15,000 acres of county-owned open space, which is visited by two million park users each year. Five golf courses have three driving ranges, a pitch and putt course and a recreational putting course. Other attractions include a riding stable, an environmental education center, two tennis facilities, an outdoor pool, paddle boating, a rock and rare plant garden, an award-winning rose garden, an arboretum, and a sensory and fragrance garden. Six county parks also offer amenities such as athletic fields, picnic facilities, bike paths, fishing, birdwatching, cross-country skiing, and hiking.
