Somerville Branch Reopening with Services Consolidated to One Floor

SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Somerville branch of the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) is pleased to announce it will officially reopen its doors to the public on Monday, September 8. This phased reopening follows a temporary closure that began on August 9, 2025, to address the presence of mold in the building’s lower level.

Following a discussion with the Borough of Somerville, SCLSNJ is updating how library space will be allocated, improving accessibility by bringing all public services to the first floor, and designating the lower level for storage. This change ensures a sustainable, long-term solution to recurring issues and avoids the need for repeated, temporary fixes and additional remediation expenses. This new arrangement also prioritizes the quality of both the staff and patron experience, recognizing that a better work environment contributes directly to providing excellent public service.

Beginning September 8, the branch will provide convenient lobby access for patrons. During this period, patrons can access services, including hold pickups and reference services in the current circulation area from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. During this time, the work needed to relocate and reconfigure the library's collection and furniture to the first floor will occur. This initial step is designed to restore essential services promptly while prioritizing the safety and well-being of both patrons and staff.

Expected to be completed two to three weeks later, the branch will welcome the public back to a reimagined first floor with full branch hours restored (10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday & Saturday). In this space, the youth and adult collection will be accessible on one level, providing a more inclusive and patron-friendly environment. The improvements are designed to create a highly merchandised and easily browsable collection for an overall enhanced experience, while also continuing to allow space for limited events.

"We are incredibly appreciative of the Borough of Somerville for their time, funding, and resources, as well as their continuing partnership, and their responsiveness in addressing the need for remediation. While we wouldn’t wish for building problems, I am thankful that we could come together and use this as an opportunity to think creatively about how best to use the space." said Peter Bromberg, SCLSNJ Library Director. "The health and safety of our community and our staff is a top priority. We are confident that these enhancements will provide a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. We can't wait to welcome the community back and share these exciting changes."

SCLSNJ will announce the exact date for the full first-floor reopening on its website and social media channels.
