Hillsborough Recognized as Large Municipality Sustainability Champion

Hillsborough Township earned statewide recognition this week as a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainable community practices. At the Sustainable Jersey Luncheon, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) President Christine Guhl-Sadovy presented the Sustainable Jersey Special Awards, honoring municipalities that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to building a cleaner and more resilient New Jersey.

Hillsborough Township was named the Large Municipality Sustainability Champion, joining the City of Bordentown, which received the Small Municipality Sustainability Champion award, and the Borough of Madison, recognized as the Medium Municipality Sustainability Champion. The awards highlight municipalities that have gone beyond baseline requirements to implement innovative, impactful sustainability initiatives that benefit residents and the environment alike.

For Hillsborough, the recognition underscores years of focused effort on sustainability, resilience planning, and community-wide engagement around environmental priorities. From energy efficiency and conservation initiatives to long-term planning that balances growth with environmental responsibility, the township has positioned itself as a model for large municipalities across the state.

NJBPU and Sustainable Jersey also extended congratulations to all municipalities recognized across multiple award categories at the luncheon, acknowledging the collective leadership and innovation taking place throughout New Jersey. Together, these efforts are helping communities reduce environmental impact, prepare for climate challenges, and invest in a greener future.
