SOMERVILLE, N.J. – On November 18, 2024, following a week-long trial, a Somerset County Jury convicted defendant Junior Suriel-Gonzalez, age 38, Manville, N.J., of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and disorderly persons simple assault. The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Ryan A. Quiñones, with the assistance of Litigation Paralegal Tiffany Gordon. Sentencing is scheduled for January 10, 2025, at which time the defendant faces up to five years in New Jersey State Prison.
On February 11, 2024, Super Bowl Sunday, the defendant was present at a local establishment in Manville. When the defendant was asked to leave the bar, he armed himself with a beer bottle and attacked an employee with the bottle, swinging it over the top of the employee’s head. The defendant was subdued and removed from the bar, after which he fled in his personal vehicle.
The defendant was ultimately placed under arrest by members of the Manville Police Department several blocks away, during the early hours of February 12, 2024. The State would like to thank the Manville Police Department, the Bound Brook Police Department, and the medical staff of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.
