BRIDGEWATER – When the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad needed a new website, they decided to reach out to some local talent – students in the Computer Science program at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS).

The Rescue Squad wanted to create a tool that would emphasize the mission of their organization, while increasing community engagement, streamlining recruitment, and providing information on the services the Rescue Squad provides to the people of Manville. As a graduate of Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools, Rescue Squad Captain Gianni Matadial was familiar with the pool of talent available in the vocational school system. “We saw an opportunity to work together on a project that would enhance our organization's digital presence while providing the students with valuable real-world experience” he said. He contacted Ms. Sharon Phillips, the Computer Science instructor at SCVTHS, who assured him that her students were up to the challenge of developing the website.

The students were briefed on specific goals for the project, and used this information to start designing the site. Throughout the process, there was continuous contact and feedback between the student developers and the Rescue Squad clients. This resulted in an experience that gave the class an insight into the day-to-day operations of the Squad, as well as giving them experience in not only coding but also client relations.

As the project neared completion, the students made a trip to the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad headquarters to present the site to the squad members. While there, they were given certificates of appreciation for helping to provide a new online presence for the Rescue Squad. In addition, Ms. Phillips was honored with a proclamation from the organization that honored her “leadership, mentorship, and dedication to fostering the next generation of innovators.”

“We are incredibly impressed with the attention to detail, clean design, and intuitive navigation that make the website both professional and welcoming” said Captain Matadial, adding “The website that was produced exceeded our expectations in every way. The students demonstrated impressive technical skills and creativity, delivering a modern, user-friendly, and functional platform that effectively represents the Manville First Aid and Rescue Squad.”
