As the auspicious Year of the Dragon begins, the U.S. Postal Service introduces a new stamp commemorating the Lunar New Year. The Year of the Dragon begins Feb. 10, 2024, and ends Jan. 28, 2025.
The Lunar New Year festival is marked by parades, customary foods, and red and gold lanterns. In addition to lighting firecrackers to ward off evil spirits, people clean their houses as a symbol of renewal before spring. To celebrate the new year, they write couplets, give gifts, and prepare traditional meals. It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon are successful, wise, and powerful. Many people consider the dragon to be so favorable that they plan for their children to be born under it. Due to the allure of the dragon, the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac, many Asian communities experience a baby boom every 12 years.
